Rev. Peter Fairbrother | Interfaith Minister & Spiritual Counsellor

Rev. Peter Fairbrother
Interfaith Minister & Spiritual Counsellor

Calling
Throughout my life I've felt called to spiritual exploration. My journey began with Catholicism; the religion I was born into and grew up with, and continued through my twenties and thirties with expeditions into Protestantism, the earth based traditions, New Age philosophies, and Spiritualism.

It was within Spiritualism that I first experienced a deep sense of connection to faith-based community. In 2006 I joined my local Spiritualist church and began development as a spiritual healer. I served for eight years, latterly leading services of meditation and healing.

In Spiritualism I thought that I had found my spiritual home, but as time passed I continued to hear the calling to further exploration. Eventually I found my way to the OneSpirit Interfaith Foundation and to training for interfaith ministry.

The two year training programme for interfaith ministry involved studying the world's major religions, training in spiritual counselling (sometimes referred to as deep listening/ spiritual accompaniment), training in holding ceremony, and a deepening into one's own spiritual practice.

The training has had an enormous impact on my life. It has inspired me to look afresh at how I am with myself and others. It has challenged my understanding of healing and what it is to be a healer. And it has gifted me with an revitalised awareness of the importance of loving myself more as the starting point to manifesting love in the world. Subsequently, I've come to recognise my lifelong calling to spiritual exploration as a calling to love, a calling home.

I was ordained as a OneSpirit Interfaith Minister in 2016. During the first year of my ministry I served the OneSpirit community as a mentor to the 2016 intake of ministry students. In 2018 I was appointed Minister of St. Mark's Unitarian Church in Edinburgh.

The ground of my being
My birthplace: Newcastle, Co.Down, Northern Ireland - 'where the mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea.'
I couldn't imagine a world without flowers. These are my favourites.
For me there is a precious connection between Kate Bush and my training as an interfaith minister. I saw Kate in concert in September 2014 during an extended birthday weekend which included my attendance at the seminary's introductory day in London. Treasured memories.
Pictured is a still from my favourite film 'Jesus of Montreal' (1989), a beautiful cinematic exploration of faith, religion, morality, politics and society.
Hello!
I adore modern art. Pictured is the interior of one of the finest museums of modern art (in my opinion) - MACBA, Barcelona. I love travelling in Europe. The UK joined the EEC, as it was known, the year I was born. I have a heart connection to the European dream of shared peace and prosperity.
Happy days in Wales... I studied Librarianship & Drama at Aberystwyth University in the early nineties. Since then I've worked in information management, research and project work in UK health and social services.
Divinity in all things... I'm a big fan of the Eurovision Song Contest. Each year I travel across Europe to attend the contest and join in the celebrations with fellow devotees. This picture was taken in 2014 when the contest was held in wonderful Copenhagen.
I live in beautiful East Lothian, Scotland. Pictured is the coastline at Prestonpans, which is a 5 minute walk from my home.
